Planning a solo trip through Southeast Asia can feel overwhelming—where to start, how to move around, and what’s actually worth your time? I’ve done this route multiple times, and here’s a 7-day version I always recommend for first-timers. It’s fast but flexible, scenic, and budget-friendly.
Day 1–2: Bangkok, Thailand: Arrive in Bangkok and base yourself near the old town (I like the Samsen Road area—quiet but walkable). Spend a full day exploring Wat Pho, Grand Palace, and taking a sunset boat ride along the Chao Phraya River. End with street food at Raan Jay Fai or the night markets.
Day 3–4: Chiang Mai: Take an early morning flight or overnight train to Chiang Mai. This city is a solo traveler’s dream: safe, walkable, full of hostels and digital nomads. Spend your time on a jungle trek or temple hop (don’t miss Wat Doi Suthep). Eat khao soi and take a Thai cooking class.
Day 5–7: Hanoi, Vietnam: Fly into Hanoi for a totally different vibe—bustling, poetic, delicious. Stay in the Old Quarter. Walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, try egg coffee, and take a half-day food tour. If time allows, book a 1-night cruise in Ha Long Bay or do a day trip to Ninh Binh.
Travel Tips:
Use Grab app for taxis in both countries.
Bring USD for Vietnam entry fees and visa-on-arrival.
Best time: Nov–Feb for cooler, dry weather.
Ideal solo stays: The Yard Hostel (BKK), Stamps Backpackers (Chiang Mai), Nexy Hostel (Hanoi).
Wrap Up: This is the route I come back to when I want to hit reset. It’s perfect for solo travel: vibrant cities, super kind locals, easy transport, and you’ll meet tons of people doing the same thing. Want a copy of the exact map and budget sheet I use?
